Hey there! Unfortunately my slots closed about a week ago. ;_;
Do not do his commission EVER, check his tag, he’s a scam artist
Just a heads up
Oh dear, I did some research and read up on him and…yikes. I never would’ve gone through with anything he asked of me, but it’s good to know and I’ll be reblogging a longer post about him. Thanks for the heads-up!
ARTIST COMMISSION FRAUD ALERT: Matt Ryne Smart (taurinedippy/dippy1224)
This is a commission alert for Artists and Writers about Matt Smart. He has notoriously commissioned work from artists in the past, promising pay and refusing to deliver.
He is a time waster and an asshole and I hope my experience with him and the actions I am taking in regards to it helps warn other people away from him and others like him.
Matt contacted me over tumblr using his alias “dippy1224” requesting a commission for a short story for $100. I have the words “occasionally takes commissions for short stories” on my tumblr profile and I have taken commissions in the past that went absolutely beautifully, so I wasn’t surprised or put off by his request. I agreed to the offer, told him I have a 25% retainer fee before I do any work, sent him my paypal email and asked for more information. He told me that he would like an erotica piece and that he wanted to write it in conjunction with me in on the website Titanpad (like googledocs). That sounded fine, I’m not a stranger to erotica commissions. So I agreed.
When we met up on Titanpad, he informed me that he wanted to write a rape fantasy story. Now, I’m the type of person who doesn’t like to kink shame. Especially if something is consensual. But I am also a rape victim, and naturally, have some reservations about recreating a situation so similar to one I have lived through for the purpose of someone’s sexual fantasy. So I told him that I would write the story, but also informed him of my rape victim status and let him know that I would have reservations about writing certain things. He seemed cool with that and assured me that he wasn’t ever going to try to rape anyone, but that he was just exploring the kink. So, I gave him the benefit of the doubt and moved on to the next topic: Payment. I told him that before we begin the story I needed my retainer. I already gave him my paypal and at this point, was wondering why I hadn’t received it yet.
He then told me that he had been shafted by an artist in the recent past who had flaked on finishing a work he’d commissioned so he wanted to pay me after the story was finished.
I know. Huge warning sign.
However, since I was literally writing the story with him and it was a short story (maybe only 5-10 pages long) I figured I would just let it slide. Besides, If he was shafting me, he would be in for a surprise. Not only am I a writer, but I’m also an accomplished researcher and HACKER. He was going to pay for this story one way or another.
About halfway through the story, he started adding new details that he wanted and trying to change the storyline into something much longer and more graphic (both sexually and violently) than we originally agreed upon. I refused. He threatened to doc payment because I was “disappointing him”. So I reminded him of our original contract. He insisted on the changes and was rude about it. In response, I rolled up my sleeves and started researching him. I had been writing the story with him for over four hours and the more I talked to him, the less likely I felt I was actually going to receive the money I’d been promised. I am busy as fuck and I don’t have time to waste on shitty commissioners.
So, even though I only had his email address (and literally nothing else), I dredged up his facebook, myspace, deviantart, twitter, youtube channel, pictures of him, his real FULL name and birthdate and also found that warning (the bottom picture) about him on another erotic art website.
With this information in hand, I DEMANDED that he pay me for the work I had already done (which was about half) or I would email the entire horrifyingly gross rape fantasy story, that he tricked me into helping him write without intending to pay me, to someone he knew. Maybe his dad. No excuses. 50 bucks. Pay me.
He teased me for a bit, mocking me, claiming I could never find him. But when I proved that I already had, He immediately caved. Not only did he apologize profusely and begged me not to force him to pay the 50 dollars (which it turned out that he didn’t have. This was accompanied by a sob story about his life and how sad it is) but he also agreed, as a stipulation of me letting him get off scott free, to let me make this announcement warning people away from him. The picture evidence is above.
I am sick and tired of people thinking they can take advantage of artists. Its disgusting exploitation and I WILL NOT STAND FOR IT. Many other artists didn’t have the leverage or the skills that I do and probably just had to lay down and take his bullshit and the bullshit of others. So I did it for myself, but I also did it for all the other artists he’s fucked and all other artists who he may fuck over in the future.
PAY FOR SHIT YOU ORDER. YOU WOULDN’T DO THIS AT A RESTAURANT WHY WOULD YOU DO THIS TO ANYONE ELSE WHO PROVIDES YOU WITH A SERVICE.
And for the love of god, SIGNAL BOOST.
Omg lmao this guy… Someone reblogged a post I made a few weeks ago that had me answering an ask he sent about a writing commission. I was telling him my slots were closed. The person who reblogged my post warned me that he’s a scammer so I dug this post up and wow… He’s still doing it, I guess. :’D The name/email looked familiar, so I looked through my emails and found that he’d actually emailed me before sending me that ask and I didn’t realize it was the same person.
Obviously I RP quite a bit so that was kind of a white lie. :’D I thought his request was extremely suspicious so I used that as a pretense to decline, but I’m glad to know that my suspicions were well-founded.
Never ever take on work you’re not comfortable with, especially from someone who gives dodgy reasons for not wanting to or being able to pay you. I guess I’m in the enviable position of being able to pick and choose what I work on and someone in a more desperate situation would be more willing to overlook certain things… But really, needing money is all the more reason why you should be careful and protect yourself from scum like this.
